Generative AI Can Harm Teaching
Summary
A recent working paper examines the tension between teacher productivity and student experience.
Sungu, Lira and Duckworth report that randomized teacher access to generative AI in Turkish schools reduced student intrinsic motivation by 0.11 SD, with no statistically significant average achievement effect reported. Their abstract also reports adverse results among lower-performing teachers.
These preliminary abstract-level findings warrant checking student experience alongside workload. They do not establish mechanisms or generalize to every teacher or planning design.
